Welcome to Maine Parity – Raising Awareness of Discrimination in Insurance Coverage for persons suffering from Addictive and Mental Halth Disorders
Welcome To Maine Parity
Maine Parity site is dedicated to advancing the enforcement of The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA or Parity Act). It is for both Providers to report claim denials and barriers experienced in accessing treatment. It will collect data on commercial insurance claims processing to measure incidence and prevalence of Parity violations in the State of Maine. Data collected will include socioeconomic data, treatment type data, denial codes and other data points to measure compliance and identify trends in coverage for treatment types by insurer that are in violation of parity . The data will be used to advance legislative policy reform and support enforcement.
The failure of States to enforce the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act allows the private insurers to consistently deny legitimate claims resulting in a persistent major barrier for persons suffering from substance use and mental health disorders to access treatment and is a leading contributor to the incidence of opioid mortality.
The latest Parity report published in 2018 by The Kennedy Forum indicates that Maine commercial insurance has a passing grade of only 76 C. We can do better in Maine but to do so we need to collect the data to hold the offenders accountable. (Read More about Maine Parity Legislation)
